A group of Cape Town business
and professional people, in concert with members from Fezeka, have
been undertaking a series of concrete initiatives to directly assist
Fezeka and its students.
Mentoring and Training Program
Volunteers have enthusiastically
embraced the Fezeka project and are constantly finding new and innovative
ways to help. One example is the mentoring and apprenticeship opportunities
they are creating for students in the community. These include:
Garment Industry traineeship
Law firm job shadowing
Shadowing the curator of the South
African Museum in Cape Town
Drama workshop for students and
teachers at Fezeka by an actress and drama teacher
Shadowing film-makers
Three graduates accepted into
the Tsiba program, a 4-year B.Comm. program, where all tuition
costs are covered!
Mentoring Program
with Virtus Clinical Development
Students Makhosi and Minnie, in their final year at Fezeka, are assisting Anlie Malherbe of Virtus Clinical Development (Pty) Ltd to monitor a study to investigate the effectiveness and safety of a drug for HIV-AIDS. Their task is to separate the data forms and to prepare the forms for dispatch to the data management centers.
Alexandra (Alex) Abraham is the first Canadian sponsored by Education without Borders to work as a volunteer teacher for a full year at Fezeka Senior Secondary School in Guguletu, South Africa. EwB acknowledges the contributions of many generous supporters who made this possible. Follow her experiences in her blog:
